We have researched natural disasters and weather to give us a basis for our weather poems. We are using the 'Important book' to base our poems off of. We were given some criteria to use figurative language to help write our poems. Ask me about mine!
The Hour of Code
People around the world this week are experimenting with coding! Coding is a literacy - a way that people can create programs to help experience the world. Coding will be very important in the future, many of us may have to use it to do our jobs!
We used www.playcodemonkey.com to help a monkey to get his bananas! Code Monkey uses CoffeeScript. Some of us also used another programming language called scratch. the website is: scratch.mit.edu . You can also visit code.org to check out many other coding activities.
The Science of Snowflakes
In class we have been learning about different types of snowflakes as part of our weather unit. Scientists have categorized snowflakes into different groups, such as: dendrites, simple stars, sectored plates, triangular forms, stellar plates, hexagonal plates, and many more. Today we made our own snowflakes and put them into the right category.
We are also researching to create our own snowflake trading cards! One website that is excellent is http://snowcrystals.com
Power of One Presentation
The Power of One presentation was about anti-bullying. There are three participants in bullying : the bully, the target (victim), and the bystander (witness). There are three types of bystanders: the watcher, the ignorer and the cheerleader. There are a few types of bullying: physical (physical contact), cyber (something that happens online), verbal (with your voice - using words) and exclusion. The power of one is yourself - you can stop bullying by standing up to the bully and telling them to stop and telling an adult. If you are a bystander and you don't help the victim, you could also become a victim and then possibly a bully yourself. Bullies are often hurting themselves and have been a victim of a bully in the past.
Bullying is: Purposeful (hurting you on purpose), Repetitive (doesn't happen only once), Hurtful (hurts you physically, emotionally and mentally).
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO STOP BULLIES IS TO STAND UP AND TALK TO THEM AND AN ADULT.
